The basics of acoustics

Learn all about music acoustics!

This site contains information about music acoustics and features a selection of learning aids that illustrate many of the basic aspects of this field of study. The content of the site has been created by Aarre Joutsenvirta, a lecturer of music theory at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, and it was originally written to form a part of the study materials for a course entitled Theory of Music (part I). The site is, however, open to everyone, and feedback is warmly welcomed.

In order to be able to fully use the features of the site, you will need a computer with a sound card and loudspeakers or headphones. To use the self-study exercises, you must download and install the JSyn and Flash plug-ins into your web browser. (The plug-ins are installed on all computers in the Sibelius Academy's computer classes.)
