Katri Sipiläinen

1979 Savonlinna

Katri Marjaana Sipiläinen is represented in the text as an anagram Initial Pink Arse, who is having a conversation with another anagram, Alien Aspirin Kit.

Initial Pink Arse: Painting is going against the current of consumer culture and a society which is based on economic growth and which denies the presence of death. A painting is a situation, not an object.

Alien Aspirin Kit: Watch out for fanaticism, my dear. Isn’t it a bit arrogant to claim that you know more about death than the average supermarket customer?

Initial Pink Arse: Sometimes you need to add contrast to be able to say something. News represents a socially organized surface, while the reality portrayed in paintings presents us with another kind of voice about our experiences. The more we conceive of everything around us as immutable reality, the less opportunities we have to make a difference in the world.

Alien Aspirin Kit: Oh, the magical conceptions of names and the power to control through them.

Initial Pink Arse: Let’s not get carried away here. Materiality and the level of colours, gestures and physical presence are calmly proportional to the simplicity of the truth conditions. There’s snow on the rock. The sweet is in wrapping paper. Hogs go for a wash.

Alien Aspirin Kit: Hogwash.

Initial Pink Arse: There’s also another point of view that has to do with the composition of meaning and storytelling. Many mythologies include a Trickster character, who stretches the boundaries of meanings and rules. The stories show that the clever pranks performed by the Trickster have positive consequences. They make the attitudes and values inherent in the structures of culture visible.

Alien Aspirin Kit: Is that based on the conception that we are living in a prison until we are woken up by a Messianic figure?

Initial Pink Arse: No, it’s something else. I’m not saying that I know, I’m saying that I’m wondering. And my way of working is not like the main statement in a classic film. To great extent, it is about intuition and randomness. If it were a direct manifest, it would make more sense to send telegrams.

Alien Aspirin Kit: Or to become a wandering preacher.

Initial Pink Arse: When it comes to my materials, I want to use excess items found in flea markets and garbage cans. I want to cook up the paints and primers. The colour you make yourself is closer to the holy existence of the carrot than convenience food.

Alien Aspirin Kit: But it will not necessarily show in your works.

Initial Pink Arse: That’s true. We’ll see.
