Instructions to the musicians

The aim of the studio session(s) is to invent together a piece of improvised music by means of interchanging collective improvisation and verbal discussion.

The resulting music should use the elements and sounds of western art music, especially those of contemporary music which you as a Chamber Ensemble have performed together for many years.

Imitation of any specific musical style or composer is, however, not necessary. Instead, the music should be invented “naturally” and collectively.

Similarly, no direct quotations of existing compositions are welcome, but the music should be always invented “on the spot”.

The whole studio session will be video and sound recorded.

Procedure:

1) Improvise collectively and freely for 5 minutes.

2) Free discussion of what was just played; what was interesting, what was perhaps not so interesting – any further ideas for the piece?

3) Improvise again collectively and freely for 5 minutes, keeping the discussion in mind.

4) Free discussion of what was just played; what was interesting, what was perhaps not so interesting – any further ideas for the piece?

Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you collectively agree that the piece is finished, has a strong identity as a piece of music and has reached a form which you are satisfied with and which you all remember and could perform collectively.

In the beginning, the different musical ideas can float freely in time, but as the process continues you might want to decide by discussion which ideas belong to the beginning section, which to the middle section and which to the end section of the piece. When the piece is finished, you can make another piece by the same method.
